Why the Nausea during the early months of Pregnancy?

What we call morning sickness is nausea and vomiting that a woman may suffer from during her early months of pregnancy. This as you can understand is not really a good feeling to have. This feeling can be caused by a combination of many physical changes that are taking place in your body when you are pregnant.

Morning sickness usually sets in about 4-6 weeks after you have conceived and it does continue until the fourth month of the pregnancy. In some cases it has been found that morning sickness tends to haunt a woman for throughout the term of her pregnancy, but this usually happens for those women who are carrying more than one baby in their womb. The changes in your body include increase in estrogen levels, an enhanced sense of smell, excess acids in the stomach and also increased sense of fatigue. Researchers also think that morning sickness can have stress and emotions playing important roles. The term is morning sickness because these symptoms show early in the day, but they can definitely happen at any other time as well. If your morning sickness is not severe then your baby will not be hurt in anyway.

Causes of Morning Sickness

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG)
The hCG hormone rises rapidly when you are at the early stages of your pregnancy. The hCG hormone is a prime suspect in contributing to your morning sickness because nausea tends to at the peak when the hCG levels are peaking.

Estrogen
The estrogen hormone also rises rapidly during the early stages of pregnancy and therefore researchers suspect this too as a contributor to your sickness in the morning.

Enhanced sense Smell and Sensitivity to Odours
For most women it is not uncommon to feel overwhelmed with the smell of something from a block away. Well, that could be a bit of an exaggeration, but none the less women are always complaining of a very strong sense of smell during their first few months of pregnancy. This at times can trigger the gag reflex.

Stress
Researchers have also proposed that some women are psychologically predisposed to have nausea and vomiting during their pregnancy months. However, there is no conclusive evidence regarding the same, and hence this theory merely remains a theory.

The Occurrence of Morning Sickness in Pregnant Women

You are more likely to experience nausea and vomiting in the following ways. This is why there are discrepancies when it comes to morning sickness in pregnant women. They can definitely vary from woman to woman based on these lines.

•    If you have had nausea or vomiting in a previous pregnancy.

•    If you have a history of nausea or vomiting as side effects to taking birth taking pills, and this then gets related to your body’s response to estrogen.

•    If you have a history of motion sickness.

•    If you have a genetic predisposition to nausea during your pregnancy or your mother or sisters have had suffered from severe morning sickness. Then you do have a high chance of one too.

•     If you have a history of migraine headaches.

If in case you are experiencing so severe nausea and vomiting that you are unable to keep anything down your throat including water and juice and vitamins then you are probably suffering from a condition called hypermesis gravidarum. In this case you need to visit a doctor and take help as soon as possible. Treatment is necessary at this stage.
